Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips in deeper on-device AI push

  • Qualcomm introduced two Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 processors for premium Android smartphones.
  • The Extreme chip locally runs a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model.
  • Counterpoint expects global smartphone shipments to decline 14% this year.

Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and higher-end Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 for premium Android smartphones, expanding its push to run artificial-intelligence workloads directly on devices. The chips’ sensing hubs can run models with up to 200 million parameters, support personal scribe and speaker-identification functions, build activity-based memories for task suggestions, and enable complete voice-in, voice-out AI agents. The Extreme version can run a 30-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts model locally, while the standard chip adds an accelerator for more efficient AI processing. Qualcomm is positioning the processors against Apple’s A20 Pro, using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing’s most advanced manufacturing technology. The Extreme chip supports 8K video at 60 frames per second and 4K video at 240 frames per second, while both chips use AI to improve vocals and reduce call background noise. Motorola said its Signature 27 will use the Extreme chip, with availability expected this year. The launch comes as higher memory prices pressure smartphone demand; Counterpoint expects global shipments to fall 14% this year. Qualcomm shares were down 0.39% at $197.49 in Wednesday premarket trading, despite strong technical momentum, and analysts have a Hold consensus with an average price forecast of $196.95.
