South Korean retailers are rapidly expanding pre-cut fruit, cutting services and small portions as consumers seek convenience and ways to reduce waste. Only 22.1% of people aged 6 and older met the recommended daily intake of 500 grams of fruit and vegetables in 2024, down from 33.1% in 2016, while fewer than 10% of women in their teens and 20s met the guideline. Single-person households reached 10,272,573, or 42.3% of all households, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s 2026 Public Administration and Safety Statistical Yearbook. E-Mart, Lotte Mart, department stores, convenience stores and online retailer Kurly all reported strong growth in prepared-fruit sales, with retailers broadening cutting services and portion options from watermelon and melon to pineapple, pears, apples and durian.
