Bitcoin rose to $86,000, its highest level in about eight months, after the market absorbed the FOMC rate hike and the U.S. Senate’s Clarity Act vote. Wintermute said BTC and Ethereum broke above their previous range highs within hours on the morning of the 21st, while roughly $250 million in short positions were liquidated before U.S. trading began. BTC closed the week at $81,159, moving above its 50-week moving average for the first time since early November 2025 and, on a weekly closing basis, for the first time in about ten months. Spot ETF flows also improved, reducing the week’s net outflow to about $6 million after strong inflows on Thursday and Friday. Wintermute expects a new trading range to form as profit-taking is absorbed, with attention potentially returning to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Hyperliquid. Rising BTC dominance could precede a rotation into mid- and small-cap altcoins if Bitcoin advances further, while year-end call-option buying points to more bullish positioning. Holding above $86,000 is viewed by market participants as a key test for the next trend.
