South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump held an unannounced 30-minute bilateral summit during a UN General Assembly dinner reception in New York on Tuesday. They welcomed significant progress in discussions over South Korean investment projects in the United States after Seoul confirmed a $22.3 billion gas-fired power plant in Texas as the first project under its $200 billion strategic investment package. Negotiations continue on two additional projects: eight nuclear reactors in the United States and a liquefied natural gas development project in Alaska. The leaders also reaffirmed cooperation on nuclear submarines, uranium enrichment and spent-fuel reprocessing rights, shipbuilding, and the transfer of wartime operational control from the United States to South Korea. Trump reiterated his willingness to engage in dialogue with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, while Lee and Trump agreed to communicate closely to support dialogue and sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula. Lee also raised the planned Wednesday summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, including its implications for regional affairs and Seoul-Beijing relations. A senior presidential official said the deployment of troops to the Strait of Hormuz was not discussed.
