Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado made three unsuccessful attempts to return from exile in less than 24 hours, her international relations coordinator Pedro Urruchurtu said on X. The efforts involved sea and air routes from Panama, with aviation authorities in Aruba and Curacao denying landing authorization. Urruchurtu said the latest attempts brought the total to seven in recent weeks, while earlier coverage described seven failed efforts since Machado left Venezuela about nine months ago. Machado’s daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, said in New York that her mother was working day and night to return. The attempts coincided with interim President Delcy Rodriguez’s meeting with US President Donald Trump and her planned address to the UN General Assembly. Trump said the United States and Venezuela jointly influence more than 60% of global oil reserves under a newly brokered energy framework, which Machado has condemned as illegitimate. Machado left Venezuela by sea for Curacao in December 2025 to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo and has remained abroad after Maduro’s removal and two major earthquakes. The US State Department has advised against her immediate return, citing security risks, while Rodriguez’s interim administration continues to enforce entry bans introduced under Maduro.
