Cardiol Therapeutics has reached its original 110-patient enrollment target for MAVERIC ahead of its end-of-September guidance and plans to expand the pivotal Phase III trial to as many as 150 patients. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study is evaluating CardiolRx™ for reducing recurrence risk in patients with recurrent pericarditis, an inflammatory disease affecting the sac around the heart. A blinded review found fewer-than-expected recurrences among patients randomized 1:1 to CardiolRx™ or placebo. The company said the expansion is intended to capture enough events to preserve the trial's planned statistical power and support a robust assessment of efficacy. Topline results are now anticipated in mid-2027, later than the previous Q1 2027 guidance. Cardiol said existing capital is expected to fund completion of MAVERIC, with cash extending into Q1 2028. The primary efficacy analysis will measure time to a first new pericarditis recurrence, while the proportion of patients free from a new episode at study end will be assessed as a secondary endpoint. CardiolRx™ modulates inflammasome pathway activation, an intracellular immune response linked to inflammation and fibrosis. The company also develops CRD-38, a subcutaneous formulation for inflammatory heart disease, including heart failure.
