Uniper signs deal to buy 40,000 metric tons of eSAF annually for over 10 years

  • Uniper agreed to purchase eSAF from US-based Arcadia eFuels.
  • 40,000 metric tons will be supplied annually for more than 10 years.
  • EU SAF requirements rise from 2% in 2025 to 6% in 2030.

German state-owned utility Uniper has agreed to buy 40,000 metric tons of eSAF (synthetic sustainable aviation fuel) annually from US-based Arcadia eFuels for more than 10 years. The fuel will be supplied by Arcadia’s Endor project in Denmark under what the companies described as one of the largest eSAF offtake agreements (long-term purchase commitments) to date. Supplies are expected from the early 2030s and would equal the fuel used by around 1,000 Boeing 787-9 flights each year between Düsseldorf, where Uniper is based, and Abu Dhabi. The agreement comes as aviation seeks lower-emission fuels because the sector is difficult to decarbonize. Uniper CEO Michael Lewis said the priority is scaling sustainable aviation fuels from promising projects to industrial production and building a position in a market with significant growth potential. Arcadia eFuels CEO Amy Hebert said eSAF could help diversify aviation fuel supplies and expand production within the EU. EU rules require SAF to represent 2% of fuel supplied at regional airports in 2025 and 6% in 2030; eSAF must account for 1.2% of total fuel from 2030 and 5% from 2035.
