A 6-centimeter, 15-gram Gholdengo figure made from 24-karat gold is priced at ¥1.54 million, or about $9,800, despite containing roughly $2,080 worth of metal at current prices. Japanese gold goods brand SGC made the piece for The Great Gold Exhibition, with sales scheduled at Yokohama Takashimaya from September 30 to October 5. The figure is based on Gholdengo, the coin-bodied No. 1000 Pokémon from the 2022 games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Two display-only statues accompany the release: a 120-centimeter Gholdengo covered with about 730 sheets of gold leaf and a 50-centimeter Pikachu using roughly 200 sheets. Gold traded near $4,317 a troy ounce on Wednesday, while its price has fallen about 7% over the past month but remains about 15.5% above year-ago levels. The release arrives as gold funds record strong inflows, tokenized gold (digital claims linked to vaulted bullion) expands, and Pokémon collectibles outperform Bitcoin and stocks over three months this summer. Resale prices could indicate how strongly the Pokémon brand supports the figure's premium over its bullion value.
