Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would defend itself and retain its civilian nuclear program while remaining open to dialogue and negotiations with the United States. Speaking to the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, he rejected what he called coercion and said Iran would not seek permission to defend itself. The United States delegation walked out as he began speaking. Pezeshkian addressed President Trump after Trump called Iran a leading sponsor of terrorism and threatened to annihilate the Islamic Republic unless a deal was reached. He also highlighted photographs of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, schoolchildren killed in Minab by American airstrikes, and athletes and children killed in a U.S. strike on a sports stadium. The Strait of Hormuz, a route for about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas before the war, remains a central point of tension.
