President Lee Jae-myung urged global investors to invest in South Korea, presenting an economy recovering from weakness and moving beyond the Korea discount while emphasizing a plan to double semiconductor production capacity within five years. Speaking at the Korea Investment Summit in New York on September 23, Lee cited the country’s first month with exports above $100 billion, high-3% growth forecasts and projections that annual exports could reach $1 trillion. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have committed more than 800 trillion won, roughly $518 billion to $520 billion, for four new memory fabrication plants, supplier networks and supporting infrastructure. Including AI data centers and two other government megaprojects, total investment is expected to exceed 880 trillion won to 1 quadrillion won. Lee also outlined capital-market reforms, an AI supply-chain strategy, a future response fund for advanced industries and closer U.S.-South Korea industrial cooperation spanning shipbuilding and naval vessels.
