European shares closed lower Wednesday as Brent crude rose more than 1% above $100 a barrel and the Iran conflict showed no sign of ending. The pan-European STOXX 600 fell 0.4%, reversing earlier gains, while energy stocks rose 1.3% and banks declined 0.4%. Germany’s 10-year yield reached 3.550% and the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.085%, its highest since 2007. Speeches by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly offered little evidence of near-term dialogue. The STOXX 600 remains 0.8% higher this week after three weekly declines, while euro-zone business activity accelerated at its fastest pace in more than three years. Markets are also watching a planned meeting between Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for indications on trade and the global economic outlook. Arcadis fell 2.9% after WSP Global abandoned its takeover bid, KWS dropped 9% after weaker annual sales, and Adyen slipped 4.7% following its appointment of Niclas Neglen as chief financial officer from February 1, 2027.
