Bentley unveiled the Torcal, its first fully electric vehicle and fourth model line, with a starting price of £173,000 ($230,000) in the U.K. The SUV retains styling cues from Bentley’s combustion-engine cars, including diamond-shaped lights designed to evoke a traditional grille, and uses an orchestral timpani-based soundtrack to recreate the feel of a V8 engine. The launch follows Bentley’s decision to delay its first EV until 2026 and abandon its goal of becoming fully electric by 2030 as customers remained hesitant about the transition. The Torcal offers around 375 miles of WLTP range, accelerates from 0 to 60 miles an hour in 2.9 seconds and uses a 113 kWh, 800-volt battery; fast charging adds about 100 miles in seven minutes. Bentley has invested £350 million ($465 million) at its Crewe plant to build the vehicle. About half of the interest has come from existing customers and half from prospective new buyers, with strong interest in Europe, the Middle East and U.S. states with high EV adoption; a China launch campaign is planned for next year.
