Tesla has been selected as the lead supplier for a 2,500-truck battery-electric Class 8 order organized through ZET SCALE, which Catalyst Mobility and the Smart Freight Centre say is the largest U.S. electric truck order to date and could nearly double the country’s electric Class 8 fleet. The alliance, whose founding shippers include Microsoft and PepsiCo and which has also been backed by Ikea and Red Bull, aims to reach at least 10,000 trucks. Kenworth, RIDE and Volvo were named secondary suppliers, but Catalyst did not disclose how many vehicles will be Tesla Semis. ZET Financial will issue the purchase order and place trucks with carriers through its ZET Lease fair market value program, which is designed to remove residual-value risk. Initial deployments will focus on 10 freight hubs, including California, Seattle-Tacoma, Texas, Chicago, Atlanta and the Newark-New York City area. The initiative comes as electric Class 8 trucks remain far more expensive than diesel equivalents: the median battery-electric tractor price reached $411,200 in 2025 model-year data, compared with $172,500 for diesel. ZET SCALE is recruiting additional shippers and carriers, while separate efforts involving Google and Nevoya target electric-truck deployment on the Dallas-Houston corridor.
