Gold has become Hyperliquid's second-largest perpetual futures position by open interest, reaching $299.55 million as of September 24 and exceeding equities in daily trading volume. Only S&P 500 perpetual futures have greater open interest, while gold also leads activity over equity indexes, stocks such as SK Hynix and oil on HIP-3. The shift comes as gold volatility rises to 27% over 90 days, relatively close to Bitcoin's, and as traders use perpetual futures (contracts without an expiry date) for directional bets and hedging. Tokenized gold and commodities are worth nearly $5 billion, with Tether's XAUT and Paxos Gold accounting for more than 90% of the total. Demand is also appearing in meme-token pairings, including Runescape Gold with GLDX and Zhao Cai Mao with XAUT. Antalpha AI has accumulated nearly $70 million in XAUT, while XAUT trading remains concentrated on Binance and Bitget. RWA.xyz data shows commodities accounted for 54.2% of traditional-asset trading on Gate, ahead of equities. The report frames gold as part of broader crypto liquidity flows rather than an opposing asset, with 24/7 access allowing tokenized gold and derivatives to respond immediately to geopolitical news.
