SoftBank raised $11.1 billion in one of the largest bond sales by an Asia-Pacific non-financial corporate to fund the final $10 billion installment of its planned $30 billion investment in OpenAI, a deal expected to close on October 1. The offering included $10 billion of U.S. dollar-denominated senior unsecured notes across three maturities and roughly $1.14 billion from approximately €1 billion of euro-denominated notes. The transaction brings SoftBank's year-to-date capital raising through bonds and loans to about $37 billion, directed toward artificial intelligence investments and bridge financing repayment. Once the final tranche is completed, SoftBank's cumulative OpenAI investment will reach approximately $64.6 billion, representing an estimated 13% stake. SoftBank also retains a major holding in Arm Holdings, while it previously held and later sold a significant Nvidia stake. Its strategy links chip architecture through Arm with exposure to OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. SoftBank shares surged more than 7% after the announcement, suggesting investors viewed the financing as value-accretive rather than dilutive. The concentration of SoftBank's portfolio in Arm Holdings and OpenAI remains a risk. Masayoshi Son previously turned a $20 million Alibaba investment in 2000 into more than $100 billion at its peak, but his WeWork investment resulted in billions of dollars in losses.
