BitMEX has restored login and withdrawal access for customers in the United States, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Bermuda, Seychelles and Myanmar after ceasing exchange operations at 04:00 UTC on Sept. 23. The reopening is limited to fund recovery: eligible users can sign in with existing credentials, complete know-your-customer checks where required and withdraw existing balances, while new deposits are no longer credited. Customers in Cuba, Iran, North Korea and several Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine remain subject to sanctions-related compliance reviews, although certain Iranian and Russian nationals living outside restricted areas can apply individually with proof of residence. The 11-year-old exchange continues account and withdrawal operations during its wind-down, with asset minimums, network fees and possible account charges applying. Founded in 2014 by Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo and Samuel Reed, BitMEX helped popularize perpetual futures (contracts without a fixed expiry) before pleading guilty in 2024 to violating the US Bank Secrecy Act and agreeing to pay $100 million in penalties. President Donald Trump pardoned the founders in March 2025.
