The European Securities and Markets Authority has made artificial intelligence and tokenization EU supervisory priorities for 2027 under a project focused on advancing innovation while protecting investors. National regulators will map how financial institutions use the technologies for customers and conduct initial examinations of firms with the largest related exposures. ESMA identified risks including biased, ambiguous or misleading AI outputs, limited investor understanding of new products, supervisory skills gaps and dependence on a small number of technology providers. The operational and cyber-resilience priority launched in 2025 will also expand in 2027 to smaller institutions and crypto-asset service providers licensed under MiCA, building on earlier reviews of governance, key management, transaction controls, incident response, smart-contract risks and third-party dependencies.
