All 11 Democratic members of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee asked Chairman Tim Scott to hold a public hearing on prediction markets after Republican committee members privately met Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour. The lawmakers said securities-linked prediction products could raise questions within the panel’s oversight responsibilities. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the U.S. derivatives regulator, has traditionally been most closely associated with event contracts, but products tied to corporate earnings, securities and other company-specific outcomes may also involve the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the U.S. securities regulator. The September 23 request reflects growing congressional attention as prediction platforms expand beyond sports into economic releases, corporate events, politics and financial-market outcomes. The hearing request would not change Kalshi’s regulatory status or create a new law, but it would bring broader scrutiny to an industry that has increasingly crossed regulatory boundaries.
