Russia’s air defence units destroyed about 50 drones over the Rostov region overnight, while a separate drone attack damaged the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery and temporarily suspended its operations, Governor Yuri Slyusar said on Friday. The refinery, which has annual capacity of 5 million metric tons of oil, or around 100,000 barrels per day, sells fuel mainly for export. The attacks followed discussions at United Nations headquarters in New York about a potential energy-related ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he had discussed efforts to end the four-year-old war with US President Donald Trump, including a potential bilateral ceasefire covering energy-related targets. Zelenskiy also warned at the UN that Ukraine would retaliate and make the coming winter deeply painful for Russia if the countries could not agree on a truce covering energy assets before cold weather arrives. Ukraine recently struck two major Russian oil refineries in Moscow and Yaroslavl.
