Hundreds of truckers staged a 150-kilometer go-slow convoy in north-central Portugal on Friday, while commuters honked their horns on Lisbon's April 25 bridge to protest record fuel costs. Pump prices rose 24% year on year in August, with diesel exceeding €2 ($2.28) per litre, according to Eurostat data. The protests followed supply disruptions related to the Iran war and refinery attacks linked to the war in Ukraine. Truckers demanded access to partial petroleum-tax refunds available to freight and passenger transport companies. Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz acknowledged that the trucking industry had been overlooked in some measures and agreed to review its proposals at a meeting next Monday. Commuters also called for remote working to be reinstated, toll payments and the 23% value-added tax on fuel to be suspended, and Environment Minister Maria Graça Carvalho to resign over remarks urging people to drive more slowly to reduce consumption.
