Heightened U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas disrupted beef processing, feedlots, dairies, transportation hubs and related businesses, industry groups said. The Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association and Kansas Livestock Association reported worker absences and delays involving thousands of cattle, causing millions of dollars in lost revenue and forcing some plants near Dodge City, Liberal and Garden City to return animals to feedlots. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed ICE’s presence in Kansas but said agents were not conducting worksite raids. Meatpackers processed an estimated 90,000 cattle on Thursday, down 16% from a week earlier, while beef prices remained at record highs amid the smallest U.S. cattle herd in 75 years. Industry representatives warned that prolonged disruptions could reduce beef supplies and increase consumer prices.
