Brazilian fintech Nubank has approached British digital bank Monzo about a potential acquisition that could value the company at up to £10 billion, with discussions described as serious but still at an early stage. Earlier reporting put the possible valuation at £8 billion to £10 billion. Monzo is also speaking with private equity firms about selling as much as a 15% stake to raise capital and accelerate growth. Nubank, valued at $65 billion (£49 billion), has 140 million customers across Latin America and secured a U.S. banking licence in January as it expands internationally. Monzo was valued at £4.5 billion in late 2024 and most recently reported £1.7 billion in revenue and £87.3 million in pretax profit. The potential sale has revived debate over Britain’s ability to retain fast-growing financial companies, while Monzo continues to focus on Europe under Chief Executive Diana Layfield after closing its U.S. operations and launching in Spain and Ireland.
