Google is testing direct purchases from Walmart-owned Flipkart through Gemini and AI Mode in India, allowing selected users to tap a Buy button and enter a Flipkart-branded checkout flow without leaving Google’s AI interfaces. The limited October 2026 pilot covers some smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, while other users continue to see regular listings without direct purchase options. Google plans a broader rollout later in October, ahead of India’s festive shopping season. The trial advances Google’s agentic commerce strategy, supported by the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard introduced in January 2026 for connecting AI assistants with retailers’ inventory and checkout systems. The Flipkart experience appears distinct from Google’s previously demonstrated Google-hosted checkout, and the technology powering the test has not been disclosed. Google invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024 and is competing with rivals including OpenAI as it expands AI services from product discovery and recommendations toward transactions.
