South Korea and Mexico are expanding economic ties beyond automobiles, electronics and steel into AI, aerospace, energy, digital technology, advanced materials, supply chains, and cultural and creative industries. The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a business forum on Sept. 25 at the World Trade Center in Mexico City during President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit, alongside Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment and Technology (Comce). About 300 government and business representatives attended. POSCO International and Korea Aerospace Industries signed an aerospace cooperation memorandum with Mexico’s aerospace industry federation, while HS Hyosung Advanced Materials agreed with San Luis Potosí state to pursue a large-scale advanced-materials production and supply base through phased investment beginning in 2027. KCCI and Comce, and KOTRA and Mexico’s foreign trade council, also agreed to expand cooperation. On Sept. 24, South Korea’s Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan and Mexico’s Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard signed an Economic, Industrial and Resources Cooperation Initiative and agreed to launch a joint study on the potential benefits and effects of a bilateral trade agreement.
