Samsung Electronics will disclose this week how it will calculate and distribute a newly established special performance bonus for its semiconductor-focused Device Solutions (DS) division. Introduced alongside the labor-management wage agreement reached in May, the program is funded by 10.5% of DS operating profit and paid in company stock. Forty percent will be distributed across the division and 60% according to business-unit performance. If companywide operating profit reaches 300 trillion Korean won this year, memory employees could receive stock worth about 550 million won per person. The prospect of higher DS compensation has intensified dissatisfaction in the Device Experience (DX) division, which oversees appliances, smartphones and televisions. Donghaeng Labor Union members have protested near Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s residence, while Samsung plans an all-employee town hall next month led by Roh Tae-moon, CEO and head of DX. The meeting is expected to address employee demands, business performance and competitiveness initiatives, including artificial intelligence. Childcare-leave usage also fell year-on-year at Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix in the first half, despite stronger semiconductor conditions and higher bonuses.
