Hyundai Rotem is intensifying its overseas expansion around three pillars: physical AI for autonomous driving, advanced rail technology and hydrogen- and battery-powered systems. Chief executive Lee Yong-bae said at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin that the company has exported 56,000 rail cars to 40 countries cumulatively. Uzbekistan, the first country to import Hyundai Rotem high-speed trains, is nearing a second order after receiving 270 billion won ($193 million) of EMU-260 trains in 2024. The company is also bidding for New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority subway-car replacement project, valued at about 10 trillion won ($7.2 billion), and is targeting 7 trillion to 8 trillion won of the potential award. Hyundai Rotem is pursuing further high-speed rail exports to Morocco after winning an order for 440 double-decker cars. Its existing priorities also include South Korea’s next-generation high-speed train project, estimated at approximately 5 trillion won, or about $3.7 billion.
