Damage to Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities during the U.S.-Iran war has sharply reduced exports and disrupted long-term contracts, including QatarEnergy’s agreement to supply Edison, the Italian subsidiary of French EDF. QatarEnergy will cancel six additional cargoes for Edison, bringing undelivered shipments to 35, while Edison has replaced 23 cargoes, mainly with U.S. supplies. Qatar’s LNG exports fell 96% through the end of August, and damage affecting 12.8 million tons of capacity, or 17% of its total, is expected to take 3–5 years to repair. QatarEnergy has discussed securing 2 million to 3 million tons of U.S. LNG annually. South Korea has also reduced its reliance on Qatari LNG as U.S. imports rise, potentially lowering fuel costs for direct-import power companies while tight supply supports higher wholesale electricity prices.
