Hyundai Engineering has won an approximately 870 billion won ($625 million) contract to build the first phase of the Gunsan SGC AI Data Center project in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. The 60-megawatt facility will occupy a 115,702-square-meter site in Bieungdo-dong, with groundbreaking planned for October. It is Hyundai Engineering’s first order since the company established a dedicated data center unit in March, about six months ago. The project is the first phase of SGC Group’s planned 300-megawatt AI data center cluster, and Hyundai Engineering expects it to provide priority negotiating rights for a planned 240-megawatt second phase. Hyundai Engineering will handle construction, civil engineering, equipment installation, landscaping and telecommunications, including cooling and power infrastructure such as cooling towers, chillers and switchgear. KT Cloud will provide uninterruptible power supplies, batteries and automated controls. The center will use Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin AI chip and Vertiv’s modular and skid systems, which are prefabricated before installation to standardize quality and shorten construction time. Hyundai Engineering is also the preferred bidder for projects in Incheon and Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, and said its data center orders could reach about 1.9 trillion won this year if those contracts are signed as planned. The company aims to expand into operations, maintenance and investment, while developing data center energy procurement models linked to solar power, small modular reactors and hydrogen.
