Enterprises are increasingly shifting from premium AI systems offered by OpenAI and Anthropic toward cheaper open-weight models as they seek to reduce operating expenses. AlphaSense analytics referenced by the Financial Times found that corporate discussions of open AI models rose sixfold in August and September from the same period a year earlier. AT&T currently runs about 40% of its AI operations through open models and aims to reach 70% within 12 months. Companies including PNC Financial, C.H. Robinson, Match Group and Digital Realty are using or evaluating open frameworks for cost, customization, workload allocation, governance and data-security reasons. The competitive pressure is also prompting product changes from leading labs: OpenAI launched GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna with API costs 50% below the previous generation, while Anthropic introduced Claude Opus 5.5 with projected operating costs about 40% lower than the prior Opus generation.
