Kakao Group is pursuing a won-pegged stablecoin as part of everyday financial infrastructure and has proposed a roundtable with domestic and international financial institutions and companies to co-design the ecosystem. At the Next Finance Korea event held Sept. 29 at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Seoul’s Gangnam district, KakaoBank CEO Yoon Ho-young outlined three priorities: expanding won stablecoin circulation, building digital-asset-based payment and settlement infrastructure, and creating an ecosystem in which participants can coexist. Kakao said it has secured issuance and distribution technology and is verifying practical use cases, including wallet-based remittances and payments, inbound overseas payment and settlement, and AI-based agentic payments. The group has worked with Circle, Fireblocks and the x402 Foundation on domestic applicability and technical proofs of concept. Its proposed open roundtable would include banks, securities firms, fintechs, platform companies, virtual asset operators and e-commerce businesses, with the aim of creating a broader distribution network and sharing value with participating companies and users.
