A federal jury in San Diego awarded Taction Technology $5.7 billion after finding that Apple's Taptic Engine infringed two patents covering haptic technology, though jurors did not find the infringement willful. Taction alleged that Apple used its inventions without a license in devices including the iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple said its haptic system is fundamentally different from Taction's technology, rejected the damages award and said it will appeal. The dispute began with Taction's 2021 lawsuit, followed by a 2023 ruling that Apple did not infringe before a federal appeal led to a September jury trial. Burford Capital, which holds a financial entitlement in the litigation, said it would receive $1.4 billion if the verdict were paid in full, but warned that post-trial motions, appeals, settlement and collection risks could substantially reduce or eliminate any recovery.
