OVHcloud and CGI have won a 30-month European Space Agency contract to build Digital EO, an infrastructure platform for storing and processing Europe’s Earth observation satellite data. The system will combine storage, computing power and AI tools for researchers, public bodies and companies, while connecting with national and European facilities. OVHcloud, Europe’s largest cloud provider, will provide computing, storage and network capacity, while CGI will serve as architect and systems integrator. The project reflects the European Commission’s effort to direct strategic workloads to European providers, after a €180 million ($205 million) cloud tender was awarded exclusively to four European firms in April. ESA is expected to hold more than 500 petabytes of Earth observation data by 2035. Digital EO will be deployed in Italy, France and Germany, with support operations from Poland, and will feed the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation program and its DestinE digital twin of Earth. The contract is worth "multi-million" euros, while ESA did not disclose a specific figure.
