The Personal Information Protection Commission and South Korea’s three mobile carriers agreed to deepen cooperation against personal data breaches and support safer use of data in artificial intelligence services. At a roundtable in central Seoul, PIPC Chairperson Song Kyung-hee and the chief executives of SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus endorsed CEO- and board-level accountability, increased data-protection investment, stronger specialist staffing and privacy safeguards throughout AI service development and operations. The carriers disclosed planned or ongoing five-year investments of 700 billion won ($500 million) at SK Telecom and 2.2 trillion won ($1.57 billion) at KT. The parties also discussed internal-control reforms, telecom distribution-network oversight, workforce training, privacy-enhancing technologies (PET), and regulatory guidance for publicly available, pseudonymized and legitimately processed data used in AI. The commission said it would pursue regulatory improvements, including a guide on personal data handling by agentic AI, tentatively titled, within this year.
