Kwon Hyuk-bin, founder of Smilegate and the company’s chief visionary officer, has appealed a Seoul Family Court ruling ordering him to provide his wife, Lee, with shares and cash worth 2.55 trillion Korean won ($1.87 billion). The Sept. 9 ruling set the property division at 65% for Kwon and 35% for Lee, including 35% of Smilegate’s shares valued at 2.4867 trillion won and 65 billion won in cash. The award has been described as potentially the largest property division in South Korean divorce litigation. Kwon’s lawyers said he is appealing while seeking to restore the marriage and argued that Lee made little contribution to the marital assets. Lee filed for divorce in November 2022 after the couple began living separately in 2020, alleging that Kwon neglected his family responsibilities. She sought half of Kwon’s Smilegate shares and said she held a 30% stake during the company’s early years. Kwon has argued that he bears no fault for the marital breakdown and that Lee was not a co-founder because she neither invested capital in nor worked for Smilegate.
