Vitalik Buterin has outlined a post-Hegota vision for Ethereum that would turn the network into a hybrid system combining blockchain architecture with advanced cryptography. Hegota, scheduled for 2027, is likely to be Ethereum's last normal fork, after which recursive STARKs, SNARK-based verification, formal verification, optimized proof-of-stake consensus and quantum-safe cryptography would play larger roles. The plan targets finality of 8 to 32 seconds, compared with roughly 200 seconds for 12 confirmations today, alongside 4-to-8-second slots and lower hardware requirements for nodes. PeerDAS, FOCIL, multi-party block construction, privacy tools and state-management upgrades are intended to support greater throughput, censorship resistance and selective privacy. The roadmap builds on the Ethereum Foundation's draft Strawmap of seven forks through 2029, while debate continues over the practical demand for proof-based systems and the extent to which computation should occur offchain. Ether was trading near $2,700 at the time of the earlier report, while prediction markets put the probability of $3,500 by Dec. 31, 2026 at 34%.
