American Express said its credit cards can now be used at more than 190 million merchant locations worldwide, with acceptance outside the US more than doubling over the past four years. The expansion targets a longstanding gap with Visa and Mastercard, which have historically offered broader international merchant coverage and greater scale. AmEx focused on destinations including Barcelona, Hong Kong, Paris, Sicily, Mexico City and Melbourne, as well as restaurants and other high-spending categories. Billed business, a measure of spending on AmEx-issued cards, rose 9% to $455.8 billion in the most recent quarter, while quarterly revenue grew 10% to $19.6 billion in July. The company said it is pursuing more international spending from younger customers and expanding through global payment platforms, payment facilitators, licensed partners and local acquirers.
