Senator Elizabeth Warren, joined by Senators Tina Smith and Jeff Merkley, sent letters to the CEOs of Meta, Amazon, Alphabet and Microsoft seeking details on deductions claimed for AI and data center investments under the 2025 Republican tax and spending law known as the "one big beautiful bill" act. The letters also ask about lobbying before the law passed and request responses by Oct. 12. They cite sharp declines in reported tax expenses, including more than $11 billion for Microsoft, nearly $8 billion for Amazon, more than $7 billion for Alphabet’s combined federal and state expenses, and a drop in Meta’s federal tax bill to $2.8 billion in 2025 from $9.6 billion the prior year. Meta spent $72 billion on capital expenditures last year, with most directed toward data centers and AI. The lawmakers also noted that each company donated $1 million to President Donald Trump’s inauguration and spent millions lobbying ahead of the legislation. Warren has separately proposed an excise tax on energy used by AI data centers.
