President Trump’s approval rating has fallen to 37% in a Wall Street Journal poll conducted weeks before this year’s midterm elections, the lowest pre-midterm rating recorded by the Journal since former President George H.W. Bush. The result comes as election prognosticator Charlie Cook calls a Democratic House takeover a “done deal,” while the Senate is rated a “true toss-up.” The Republican Party faces an unpopular seven-month war in Iran, higher energy costs, concerns about immigration and affordability, unpopular tariffs and an escalating trade conflict with Canada. The poll found that 60% said Trump’s economic policies had worsened the economy, compared with 25% who said they had improved it and 10% who saw no effect. Emerson found that 78% of Democrats were very excited to vote, compared with 66% of Republicans and 70% of independents. Democrats need a net gain of three House seats and four Senate seats for control; Cook rates 22 House races as toss-ups, including 15 held by Republicans, and seven Senate contests as toss-ups, including five held by Republicans.
