Modulate raises $25 million for voice AI analysis and deepfake detection

  • Modulate raised $25 million from Future Ventures, Hyperplane and Lakestar.
  • Velma processes more than 10 million audio hours monthly using over 100 models.
  • Modulate previously raised $41 million at a roughly $170 million valuation.

Boston-based voice intelligence startup Modulate has raised $25 million in a funding round led by Future Ventures, with participation from Hyperplane and Lakestar. The financing brings Modulate’s total funding to $60 million, after the company had previously raised $41 million at a valuation of roughly $170 million. Modulate’s Velma platform uses more than 100 specialized models to analyze raw audio for transcription, emotion, tone, intent, conversational patterns and synthetic-voice detection. The company says Velma delivers up to twice the accuracy and seven times fewer false positives than traditional large language models used for audio tasks. Modulate processes more than 10 million hours of audio monthly and more than 600 million hours cumulatively. Its deepfake speech detection has a reported 98.9% accuracy rate and a 1.1% equal error rate, while the platform supports both real-time and batch processing. Founded in 2017 by MIT graduates Mike Pappas and Carter Huffman, Modulate began with real-time voice modulation for gaming before expanding into voice moderation, fraud detection, healthcare, financial services and enterprise compliance. The company has 40-45 employees, plans to hire 10 more, and is expanding on-premises and on-device deployment for privacy-sensitive customers.
