Shopify has activated native WebMCP support across all Liquid storefronts and its Hydrogen developer preview, allowing browser-based AI agents to search catalogs, manage carts and proceed through checkout without merchant configuration. The tools replace screen scraping with structured commands such as search_catalog, update_cart and proceed_to_checkout. Agents can modify order details, discounts, contact information and shipping data, but cannot enter payment credentials, and buyers must explicitly consent before an order is finalized. WebMCP is a proposed standard currently available through a Chrome origin trial, limiting the feature to Chromium-based browsers including Chrome, Edge and Brave. The rollout builds on Shopify’s work with Model Context Protocol and Universal Commerce Protocol infrastructure. Shopify also operates a hosted MCP server for server-to-server interactions, while WebMCP is intended for agents running in a buyer’s browser. The company has partnerships with AI agents including Muse and Instinct, and support from Google and Microsoft could strengthen adoption of the standard.
