South Korea had 1.27 million farming, forestry and fishing households in 2025, an increase of 210,000 from five years earlier, as more people apparently moved to farms. Their combined population rose by 191,000 to 2.57 million, representing 5 percent of the country's total population. The figures from the Ministry of Data and Statistics also show deepening rural aging: people aged 65 and older accounted for 51 percent of the farming and fishing population, up 9 percentage points from five years earlier. Average cultivated area per farming household declined to 0.87 hectares, down 0.2 hectares from 2020 and the lowest level since 0.82 hectares in 1960. A statistics official attributed the decline to population aging. Agriculture and livestock sales exceeded 30 million won (US$22,000) for 12.4 percent of farming households, compared with 27.7 percent of fishing households.
