AI infrastructure investment is accelerating, but Bain & Company's 7th annual Global Technology Report says the industry would need about $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to sustain the compute buildout. Existing products could generate as much as $1.8 trillion, including $200 billion to $400 billion from consumer subscriptions and advertising and $1 trillion to $1.4 trillion from enterprise uses. Bain estimates annual infrastructure spending could reach $1.5 trillion by 2031, implying capital spending equal to about 25% of industry revenue. The report identifies advertising in chatbots and AI-powered search, autonomous systems, physical AI and new applications such as drug discovery, mental-health support and materials science as potential sources of the remaining revenue. Capital spending by Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta and Oracle could reach $780 billion in 2026, while leading AI data centers are approaching 1 gigawatt and some campuses could reach 9 gigawatts by the end of the decade. Bain also describes accelerating hardware investment, supply-chain changes, cybersecurity risks and AI absorption speed as major forces shaping the industry. David Crawford, chairman of Bain's global Technology practice, said efficiency gains alone will not fund the buildout and that sustainable financing could require adding about 1% to annual global GDP growth.
