South Korea’s Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eog-won met senior officials from Nasdaq, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. on September 29 to discuss tokenized securities, T+1 settlement, market segmentation and delisting rules. DTCC said tokenized securities could become a core global-capital-markets industry, with potential to broaden beyond traditional securities products. South Korea is preparing a full tokenized-securities ecosystem ahead of the Electronic Securities Act taking effect in February 2027, requiring coordinated rules involving the government, exchanges and securities depositories. HKEX said tokenized-securities deployment, a possible T+1 transition and longer trading hours require parallel technology upgrades while accounting for staffing demands, operational time constraints and time-zone differences. The discussions expand South Korea’s wider capital-market modernization agenda, which includes the Korea Exchange’s phased plan for a 12-hour trading system by the end of 2027 and its longer-term consideration of 24-hour trading.
