Kakao Group has unveiled plans for a won-pegged stablecoin, a token designed to maintain a stable value against the won, as infrastructure for everyday financial services. At the Next Finance Korea event in Seoul on September 28, Yun Ho-young, CEO of Kakaobank and Kakao Group Stablecoin Joint TF Head, identified stablecoin circulation, digital-asset payment and settlement infrastructure, and ecosystem development as key priorities. Kakao said it has secured issuance and distribution technologies after reviewing opportunities since last year and is now testing use cases, including wallet-based remittances and payments, inbound overseas settlement, and AI-based agentic payments. The group has worked with Circle, Fireblocks and the x402 Foundation on domestic applicability and technical proofs of concept. It also proposed an open collaborative body spanning financial institutions, fintech and platform companies, virtual-asset businesses and e-commerce enterprises. KakaoPay's 43 million users remain the potential initial base for routine stablecoin payments and transfers.
