Four nuclear reactors undergoing continued-operation reviews after their design lifespans expired could have generated an estimated 23.95 million MWh during their shutdowns as of the 22nd, based on average power sales in the 10 years before expiration. The figure equals 108% of Busan City’s annual electricity consumption last year and could supply approximately 3.5 million people for a year. The reactors’ combined installed capacity was 3,800 MW, enough to serve roughly 12 semiconductor factories or 10 AI data centers at the capacities cited. Using last year’s average nuclear power sales price of 79 Korean won per kWh, the potential value of unsold electricity was estimated at approximately 1.8919 trillion Korean won. That figure represents forgone potential revenue, not an actual net loss. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power said the reviews were initiated through safety evaluation reports submitted approximately 2–3 years before the design-lifespan expirations, making it difficult to conclude that the process was delayed. Democratic Party of Korea Representative Hwang Jung-a called for expedited reviews, adjusted application schedules and parallel reviews for reactors with the same design while maintaining safety standards.
