Balazs Hanko, a former culture minister and current member of parliament, was detained in Hungary over alleged misappropriation at the National Cultural Fund (NKA), which is overseen by the culture ministry. Prosecutors said Hanko was taken into custody late Monday at the National Tax and Customs Administration after lawmakers voted to lift his parliamentary immunity. The case follows a July police raid on offices housing the main opposition Fidesz party’s internet servers and allegations that billions of forints in state grants were directed to artists and organizations linked to Fidesz through a non-transparent process. Those accused have denied wrongdoing. Former national development minister Miklos Sesztak was also detained Monday in a separate alleged bribery investigation. The developments come as Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s anti-corruption body prepares to pursue its first four cases. Magyar says corruption and misuse of public funds cost Hungary 8% to 10% of gross domestic product in recent years under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who denies allowing corruption to go unchecked during his 16-year rule.
