Greece has entered the European Union's crypto regulatory framework for the first time, with BCash, Xenios Blockchain Group, Capital Wallet Greece and Piraeus Bank added to the European Securities and Markets Authority's (ESMA) Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) register. The additions brought the register to 359 unique providers after six other firms from Germany, France and Slovenia were included. HCMC is listed as the competent authority for the three non-bank providers, while the Bank of Greece oversees Piraeus Bank, illustrating Greece's division of MiCA responsibilities between its market regulator and central bank. The registrations followed Greece's July 1, 2026, transitional deadline and coincided with a dispute over Binance's withdrawn Greek authorization application. Binance applied in January 2026 but withdrew on June 24, 2026, before HCMC issued a formal decision, citing a complicated timeline and saying it would pursue authorization through other EU jurisdictions. The Wall Street Journal later reported that ECB President Christine Lagarde had intervened to block the application. HCMC rejected the account, saying no official made the reported remarks and that it had received no communication about the application from Lagarde, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, his office, the Finance Ministry or other Greek government officials. Binance declined to address the reported intervention, while the ECB and Mitsotakis' office did not comment.
