Kraig Biocraft Laboratories has shipped its first commercial order of recombinant spider silk yarn to a globally recognized performance sports brand. The custom-processed yarn was produced to the customer’s specifications for a confidential pilot program developing a first-of-its-kind performance textile. The company did not disclose the customer, shipment volume or financial terms. Kraig Labs said the small, precision-focused order is intended to test spider silk’s strength, flexibility, toughness and light weight in demanding athletic applications. The shipment comes as textile producers seek alternatives to established fibers; Textile Exchange reported that global fiber production reached 139 million metric tons in 2025, with polyester representing 59% of output and 88% of polyester production derived from virgin fossil-based sources.
