Bitcoin’s ability to hold $82,500 is emerging as the key test for the recent XRP and altcoin rally, according to institutional market maker Wintermute. The altcoin index gained 5.0% in week 39, beating Bitcoin’s 4.1% rise, but Wintermute says retail optimism may be premature because the rally has not yet been confirmed by Bitcoin. Bitcoin’s first weekly close above its 50-week moving average since last November triggered the move, while $82,500 marks the former upper boundary of a prolonged trading range. A sustained hold could establish a base for the breakout, while a close below it would call the move into question. Wintermute expects the level to be tested several times in quick succession. Derivatives traders are replacing short-term hedges with longer-dated call options targeting $126,000 by year-end, viewing them as a relatively affordable wager on additional Bitcoin gains. The firm’s OTC desk says retail investors are selling Bitcoin and rotating profits into XRP, Ethereum and other tokens before confirmation. Market breadth, or the share of tokens rising together, has also become stretched; in 80% of comparable cases, altcoins moved sideways for an extended period or corrected when Bitcoin failed to validate their gains. Wintermute expects attention to return to major cryptocurrencies until Bitcoin advances enough to restart the broader altcoin cycle. Recent rotations, including a shift from real-world asset tokens into artificial intelligence tokens, may remain brief until then. The market has absorbed pressure from a 10-year US Treasury yield above 5%, its highest level since 2007, and a 25-basis-point Federal Reserve rate hike. The Nasdaq gained 3.3%, while gold fell 1.9% and long-term bonds declined 2.4%. Brent crude reached $103 a barrel after traffic through the SOH fell by half, raising the risk of another Federal Reserve rate increase in October if oil remains above $100. Bitcoin has also received support from ETFs, with spot funds recording a record 2026 inflow of $999 million on Monday before the figure fell to $150 million by Friday. The next major market signals are whether Bitcoin holds $82,500 and Friday’s US payrolls report.
