OpenAI launched Dots, an always-on AI agent with a colorful, bubbly avatar, alongside ChatGPT Space, a collaborative workspace for people and AI agents. Dots receives a dedicated cloud computer and browser, connects with more than 4,000 applications, can write and test code, manage bookings, update materials and submit proposed code changes for human review. OpenAI said users can control the applications and computer functions Dots may access, with important decisions requiring approval. The launch also drew attention to dot.com, a domain controlled by Elon Musk’s xAI that redirects visitors to the download page for xAI’s Grok chatbot app. Whois records show the domain was transferred in July, prompting speculation online that the purchase may have been a prank aimed at OpenAI, although xAI may have acquired it for conventional reasons such as capturing searches from people who mistype bot.com. OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, a lower-cost model intended to deliver performance near Astra, and Ultra Fast, a higher-priced mode that OpenAI said can run up to eight times faster than standard mode. Dots and Space became available Sept. 29 to ChatGPT Pro users on $100 and $200 monthly plans, Business Premium customers and Enterprise customers.
